About this attraction
The Maitland’s are a famous Scottish family who first came to Britain from France with William the Conqueror. As the seat of the Earls and Duke of Lauderdale, the Castle has at times held a central role in the history of Scotland. Now in the care of a Charitable Trust, Thirlestane has been carefully restored to its former splendour.
Nestling in the gentle Border Hills, with its rose pink sandstone and fairytale turrets, Thirlestane Castle holds a uniquely important place in Scottish history. It is one of the oldest and finest castles in the land, and home to one of the country’s most distinguished families.
Easily reached from Edinburgh just 25 miles south on the A68 trunk road at Lauder. The State Apartment awarded 5 stars by VisitScotland is located within the Castle’s south wing, with private access and exceptional views of the parkland to the front of the Castle.
Thirlestane Castle is the perfect fairy tale castle for weddings and private functions. Where grandeur and a Scottish flavour is required.
